Our Journey with Tanner

Updated: Jun 7

Tanner's journey with Bravo LT is an inspiring and heartwarming story of mentorship, personal growth, and the remarkable potential that lies within each individual. It all began in the spring of 2019 when Tanner, a curious and intelligent 15-year-old boy with autism, knocked on the office window of Bravo LT in downtown Grand Rapids. His attention was captivated by a Raspberry Pi computer and a microcontroller board connected to a machine spinning a toy tree, sparking a journey that would change his life.

In the summer of 2019, Tanner's enthusiasm led him to attend the Bravo LT Raspberry Pi Youth Coding Camp, where he discovered his passion for coding and technology. This experience culminated in Tanner attending the Bravo LT ribbon-cutting ceremony with Mayor Bliss, state representatives, and distinguished guests. His confidence and social skills shined as he engaged with attendees, demonstrating his growing maturity and willingness to step outside his comfort zone.

Recognizing Tanner's exceptional talent and potential, Bravo LT began mentoring him in the fall of 2019. We provided a supportive and nurturing environment where Tanner could develop his coding skills, build self-confidence, and explore his interests. As his mentorship continued and the Bravo LT staff got better to know Tanner and his interests (including his fondness for cheese sticks), friendships sprouted and grew.

Even during the challenging times of the 2020 Covid pandemic, Bravo LT continued to mentor Tanner virtually via Google Meet, ensuring that his development and progress were not hindered by the circumstances.

As in-person activities resumed in 2021, Tanner's growth and dedication led him to become a teaching assistant at the Raspberry Pi Youth Coding Camp, where he shared his knowledge and passion with other young learners.

Tanner's academic journey continued as he graduated from high school in the spring of 2022 and enrolled at Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC). Bravo LT's unwavering support and belief in Tanner's abilities culminated in a significant milestone when we introduced him to our client, Gordon Food Service, in late 2022. This connection led to Tanner securing an internship in the IS department, providing him with valuable real-world experience and opportunities to apply his skills in a professional setting.

Tanner's journey with Bravo LT exemplifies the transformative power of mentorship, the unwavering support of a caring community, and the extraordinary capabilities that individuals with autism possess. Through the guidance and encouragement of Bravo LT, Tanner has blossomed into a confident, skilled, and motivated young man, ready to make a positive impact on the world. His story serves as an inspiration to others, showcasing the incredible potential that can be unlocked when we embrace diversity, foster inclusivity, and provide opportunities for all individuals to thrive.
